Charles Delano Company

Charles Delano Co. is the home of New York based designer, Charles Heckman. Heckman's early work consisted of explorations into the applications of engineered bamboo materials in furnishings, recreational products and housewares.

In 2002, Heckman founded Delano Collection, a sustainable lifestyle brand that produced environmentally friendly apparel, home accessories and furnishings. Delano Collection was featured in dozens of print and online media outlets as well as CBS's Morning Show. Heckman shuttered the Delano Collection brand in mid-2007 to pursue Charles Delano Co.

Heckman's work under the umbrella of Charles Delano Co. is less commercially mainstream and focused on areas of personal interest such as jewelry design, limited-run furniture and home accessories, as well as objects under the conceptual areas of narrative form, movement, and limited-life or "dying" products.

Everything dies.

This is the truest statement one can make regarding any facet of existence. The existence of everything from the most radioactive element and the fruit fly, to mighty, rich cultures and passionate loves move toward non-existence.

With an open mind, this is not a negative fact of life to be fretted or lamented, but an opportunity to enrich our experiences and imbue them with deeper significance.

Embrace the impermanence of everything and celebrate the now.

As part of this embrace, the following concepts are frequently employed in the development process.

Narrative Form - What is an object that tells a story of its formative process or intended environment? If properly executed, does the resulting object evoke a sense of purpose, or nostalgia, or comfort with its surroundings?

Movement - What is an object with inherent movement? How can movement create a more beautiful object? Must the movement of the object be constant for its formal quality to remain at a consistent level?

Dying Products - Is it possible to distort the traditional faustian valuation concept of "long life" products? What is a dying product? What is it made of, how short a life is possible and is it possible to degrade beautifully?

The Karpos [pic] and Bulbos [pic] Vases are a collaboration between Charles Heckman and Esque Design, a Portland Oregon glass studio. Both vases are made from recycled glass and hand-blown using electric kilns powered exclusively by wind energy.

Both pieces are available for purchase through Vivavi.
